Welcome to KS1
In KS1, we aim to help children build on their independent learning from their time in Early Years by developing their key skills for reading, writing and maths. We have a passion for teaching and learning and strive to create independent, resilient learners through our delivery of a creative and engaging curriculum.
They have the opportunity to widen and explore new topics through hands on experiences. Learning in KS1 builds on the foundations already set in Reception such as phonics knowledge, developing breadth of reading and mental fluency and place value in maths.
It is important in KS1 that learning is not limited to the classroom. At the Willows we enjoy outdoor learning such as exploring the school ground and local areas. The children continue to learn practically while beginning to plan and record their learning in different ways. We provide lots of practical real-life experiences to help consolidate the children’s learning.

In KS1 children are taught phonics daily - we follow the Little Wandle programme for phonics. For reading, we use a range of books linked to our Little Wandle programme and linked to the children's stage pf phonic progression. More information can be found on our Phonics & Reading pages.
