Maths

The overall aim is that when children leave our school they:

  • have a secure knowledge of number facts and a good understanding of the four operations;
  • are able to use this knowledge and understanding to carry out calculations mentally and to apply general strategies when using one-digit and two-digit numbers and particular strategies to special cases involving bigger numbers;
  • make use of diagrams and informal notes to help record steps and part answers when using mental methods that generate more information than can be kept in their heads;
  • have an efficient, reliable, compact written method of calculation for each operation that children can apply with confidence when undertaking calculations that they cannot carry out mentally;

The 99 Club

The 99 club is a weekly challenge where all children engage in a 5 minute times tables challenge in order to earn their 99 club bands.

The aims of the 99 Club are:

  • To improve children’s knowledge and quick recall of multiplication facts
  • For all children to know multiplication facts confidently up to 12X12
  • To deepen their understanding of multiplication facts and the link to division

The 99 club consists of a series of tests (Test A and Test B in each club) which will take place every week on a Friday. Children will have 5 minutes to complete a test from the club that they are working on. Each club has a different number of questions and will test different multiplication/division facts. The 11 club consists of 11 questions, the 22 club consists of 22 questions, the 33 club consists of 33 questions and so on.

Once children correctly complete both tests for their club, they will be awarded a coloured wristband during a whole school assembly. Each ‘club’ has a different colour wristband and children can proudly wear their most up-to-date wristband at school. They will also receive a certificate to stick into their maths books.

Once children have completed all 9 clubs, they will take on the bronze, silver and gold challenges before finally attempting to become a Master of Maths

Below is a table detailing which club tests which multiplication/division facts so you can support your child at home with this. Times table games and practice sheets will be available on the learning platform for you to download and use at home. There will also be paper copies available in the classroom for anyone who does not have IT access at home.

Primary Maths Challenge

Every year, we take part in the Primary Maths Challenge (PMC).The PMC is aimed at pupils in Primary schools aged 9 and 11 to boost confidence in mathematics. It is designed to make pupils think outside the box and enables them to relate problem solving within the real world.  This challenge encourages enthusiasm in mathematics and awards certificates to everyone taking part.
